Today, I left my mom a beautiful card and an artful cashmere wrap sweater I picked up on clearance a while ago and have been saving to surprise her “just because”. She had a demanding work week, and because we hadn’t really connected in a few days, I wanted to seize this ordinary Saturday as the perfect occasion for a small gift.
My mom has taught me time and again to treat every day like a special occasion, and create reasons to give and celebrate.
You’ll hear lots about my mom, because she is not only very CHIC, she is my Nr.1 inspiration. My mom came to the US from Poland at the age of 24 with one master’s degree, and is now pursuing her second degree while working full-time to make a very direct impact on the lives of others through her leadership at a major Long Island non-profit. She is always encouraging my brother and I to seize the moment, follow our hearts and enjoy life, and she brings beauty into the lives of others (and not just because she looks incredibly gorgeous all the time). Now tell me that woman doesn’t deserve a cashmere sweater and a card!
Five ideas to treat every day like a special occasion
My mom has taught met to:
- Add a personal, creative touch to whatever I do have, rather than complain about perceived lack.
- Prepare beautiful and nourishing foods for family and friends she entertains generously and easily. (Yes, entertaining takes effort! She’ll do whatever it takes to make the lives of others beautiful.
- Be creative with my wardrobe. Personally, I’m sometimes tempted to just reach for “what I know works”…but her endless creativity toward dressing is inspiring.
- Drink tea in whatever teacups are her latest antique find and Pellegrino out of chalices
- Give, just because.:)
I’m not an heiress by any stretch of the imagination, but thanks to my lovely mom, I not only live well, I am also keenly aware of all that I have to offer to others.I hope you have someone in your life who inspires you to live well, right here and now. This present moment is your life. Let’s make it beautiful.
I took the photos above at a lovely gift shop on Main St. in Savyille, where I purchased my mom’s card. She found her gift before I had the thought to snap a photo, but maybe sometime this week you’ll find a moment to browse a well-curated and sweetly decorated gift shop in your own town.
Remember: You can always check out the cookbooks that grab your attention at the library or on Amazon, and just buy something small like a card or candle at the shop if $ means so dictate. 🙂
